How old is HHS?
HHS began work in 1994.
What areas does HHS work in?
Broadly, HHS works in the area of women’s empowerment through legal awareness and legal action support. Our work includes training, advocacy and research. More information on our work is found at the Activities page.
Where does HHS operate?
HHS activities are undertaken in the Indian state of Karnataka. Some of the key districts where we have worked include to be listed.
Why is such ‘background’ work important? Wouldn’t we be better off ‘directly’ helping poor people, including women with material aid, vocational training etc ?
While all of these activities are important, it is often found that economic empowerment alone does not ensure women’s empowerment. Women often face situations of conflict with family and community members, or even the state. Gender inequalities operate in all aspects of society making women vulnerable to discrimination and violence. Awareness of rights can be an empowering path towards justice for women. Any small gains made economically are wasted due to the lack of access to legal resources and poor or no awareness about one’s rights.
On the other hand, institutions such as the police and the legal community also need to be sensitised to the way gender bias can compromise investigations and outcomes. Without such training and advocacy, women would not be able to keep the fruits of financial betterment alone.
What other organisations or campaigns does HHS work with?
While HHS work is primarily in the area of legal awareness, support and advocacy, we work with a host of overlapping issues and organisations working towards the common goals of women’s empowerment. HHS has been an active part of support initiatives on issues of acid attacks on women, domestic workers’ rights, anti-communalism and fundamentalism.
