Lack of awareness about one’s rights has been one of the major impediments for women to access justice. This is compounded by a system where caste and class along with deeply ingrained gender biases continue to play a major role to often deny poor women their rights. Many studies have shown that such biases often influence police investigations as well as judicial proceedings at lower courts.
Therefore, we began in 1993 with a belief that equipping women with the knowledge and use of law would lead to enhanced assertion of their rights. We began with training on rights and law for poor rural women and NGO activists working with them in Karnataka.
Today, besides using training as a methodology, we work with grassroots NGOs, state institutions, media, civil society organizations, professional organizations, students and trade unions to promote women’s rights through research, documentation and advocacy.
