Research


 

Research at HHS is a critical inquiry into how gender operates in the legal, social, economic and cultural domains and its impact on women’s day today lives. One of the areas of critical concern for HHS has been framing and understanding violence against women as a Human rights violation. 
Our research studies so far includes:
 

1. Domestic Violence: Patterns and Trends of Domestic Violence- a study of organisational data in Bangalore, India. Year: 1998-99

This study was an analysis of primary records of agencies that deal with domestic violence. This study was conducted as a part of a series of studies, sponsored by the ICRW across India on the issue of Domestic violence. 2. Sexual harassment at the workplace- Perception of workers and prevalence of sexual harassment in different work sectors in Bangalore city, year 2001.

On 13th Aug 1997 the Supreme Court of India issued a landmark judgment that recognised and addressed sexual harassment at the workplace as a human rights violation. The court brought out guidelines defining sexual harassment and directives for employers/organisations making it mandatory to institute sexual harassment complaints committees at workplaces. The study enquired in to the prevalence of sexual harassment and redressal mechanisms the workplaces have already in place.
 

3. Our body through Our eyes:

An exploratory study attempting to understand how women relate to and experience their bodies vis-à-vis labour, pleasure, public and notions of private, creativity, shame, etc. A report based on 50 conversations with women from various walks of life on body politics and women was brought out.

 

4. Gendering the Juvenile Justice system: A study with Centre for Child and Law at the National Law School University.

This was study to understand how gender manifests itself within the Juvenile Justice system and how it impacts on girls who come to into this system; this micro-level study is representative of the realities and experiences of girls currently contained within the system.

 
5. A study on State run services for women facing violence in Karnataka: The study looks at various services such as shelter homes, counseling, legal aid etc offered by the State in 11 districts in Karnataka to women who are in crisis. The study enquires into accessibility and quality offered at state run couselling and shelter homes.
